In the vaguest of product descriptions lurks the heart of the all mountain freestyle board. It’s the jack of all trades, but master to none. Whether you’re slashing pow or sending a 45 foot park jump of death this is where these boards are most at home. As vast as the category for all mountain freestyle so is their ability to adapt to any and all terrain. We rode a lot of decks (129 to be exact) for 2016, there were a lot of all mountain freestyle boards, but here are the top five that stood out.
Rome Mod Rocker: There is no way to properly introduce this board and give it the praise it deserves. Believe me I’ve tried for the last few years. Here’s what you need to know, if you’re a solid rider that does it all this is your quiver of one. That’s it, that’s all. The camber profile, flex, and over all shape are what make it this. Every other board on this list basks in its shadow.
Marhar Regent: Once again the little guys from Michigan show that they know how to make a versatile snowboard. While the graphic might be reminiscent of an Arbor, I assure you the ride is all theirs. The use of a minimal flat zone into a upward kick (*reverse camber) gives it the ability to be easy to press, easy to float, yet when it’s coupled with their Attack Arc sidecut you get stability and grip. Railing turns or slashing chunder this board is at home on the mountain.
Yes Typo: This is no typo, this board is a great all mountain board. It is reminiscent of days gone past with the slight set back it has as well as the camber rocker profile. For those of you that are now rad dads, or perhaps have friends that are rad dads this is the deck to look at. While not as playful as the Regent from Marhar or as dominating as the Rome Mod Rocker it still shines as a quiver of one board.
Capita Defenders of Awesome: Do you defend awesome? I think anyone that really loves snowboarding is a true defender of it. Whether that means shitting on industry politics or just saying fuck it snowboarding is fun. This is the most aggressive of the boards on the list, making it a true powerhouse of domination. So bring your A game and expect to know how to press a snowboard as well as stay on top of it when riding.
Salomon Craft: Here’s the dark horse of this list. The Craft hasn’t been a board that has really stood out in the Salomon lineup. It’s there, it has its following, but does it shine? Well for 2016 it does. This is a playful board that lets you be a little more loose with your riding but when you need it you can be calculated. It’s very similar in its riding to the Marhar Regent above, but seems to take its pop cues more from the Capita DOA.
